Sports cars preview: LMS in Budapest, ALMS in Elkhart Lake
Thanks to a terrific organizational performance by IMSA and ACO will be traveling on Sunday evening Le Mans sports car on both sides of the Atlantic simultaneously.
First, the European Le Mans Series. Which has this year secured an appointment at the Hungaroring, a track that is known for its many curves and a few lines and the resulting Überholproblematik from Formula 1. Sports cars are there somewhat less sensitive than the single-seater premier class, but probably the narrow layout decisive influence on the race, and that while lapping. For all vehicles to broadcast over and over broadcasting, which is a long, exhausting evening that requires a lot of patience. Especially since the Hungaroring is not undemanding yes.
Yeah, right: evening. As in the Algarve a few weeks before you go back into the darkness, one will be launched by 18 clock, the finish line should be present, respectively, between 21:30 und 22 clock. Euro Sport is also unfortunately again transferred only this half hour.
At the start, 38 vehicles, Kruse-Schiller Motorsport has canceled today; official reason: the two regular drivers are unavailable. However, there is the presumption that a simmering dispute between the two team owners could be related to the cancellation - the print MSa reported after the 24-hour race of Le Mans such a dispute.
Again this is for the Mansell, but only the two sons are reaching into the control of the rebuilt Ginetta Zytek. Sporty considered could be an advantage, because too much is father Nigel has not covered itself with glory in this year. The ranks of the absolute top drivers but also his offspring are not, for the struggle for the class win it is hardly rich and also a podium would have been a very ambitious goal. Of these, one also speaks not, but sees the whole thing as a test for the home race at Silverstone, in which Nigel Mansell, who brings up to date with charity bike tours in the form, will be back.
The favorites to win are without doubt again Lapierre, Panis and Sarrazin Against the diesel probably no other LMP1 vehicle have a chance, so the car by holding the Oreca Peugeot 908. On the curved path while its top speed is one not so much, but the mighty torque helps when accelerating out of the many corners.
So should the other gasoline engine, especially the signature Aston Martin (Rag / Mailleux / Ickx) and the two Rebellion Lolas (Jani / Prost and Belicchi / Boullion), again fighting only to rank 2, even if we now had a few weeks time to work out the optimum utilization of the allowable few days before the Algarve race restrictor magnification. However, this gasoline-triathlon promises quite voltage.
Some growth there is in the LMP2 class: Racing Box brings his two Pirelli tires Lola B08 / 80 at the start (Perazzini / Cioci / Pirri and Geri / Babini / Leo) that were missing at the last round, as is the Race Performance Team, 56th nachgerückter starter in Le Mans, with this (Frey / Buncombe, the latter drove two weeks ago still ALMS).
However, a real newcomer is only the RLR team, which began vehicles already in various national and international series. The three riders Barry Gates, Rob Garofall and Warren Hughes will be driving a MG Lola EX265 somewhat outdated with AER turbocharged engine from former Ray Mallock Ltd. stocks. Gates and Garofall are masters of the (albeit sparse) Speed Endurance series in its European variant, respectively, British, Hughes has already LMP2 experience with said RML team. Interestingly, as RLR occurs only LMP2 team with Michelin tires, but this is likely the first appearance not much more than one (in the best case: long) will test drive.
Favorites are as well in the last race Strakka (Watts / Kane / Leventis), RML (Newton / Erdos / Collins), Quifel (Amaral / Pla) and OAK (Nicolet / Lahaye and Moreau / Hein). The championship currently leads RML with 55 points ahead of the two OAK-Pescarolo, since the Mallock team simply constant enters as Strakka points, which are actually the fastest team, but have recently written two "noughties" (or "ones", because for each fetched Pole there is a point).
While unsubscribe again in GT1 the two outdated Saleen Larbre Atlas and their duel, the GT2 is expected to again deliver the most spectacular battles. The Team Felbermayr-Proton sets this time even a third Porsche with drivers Horst Felbermayr Sr., Horst Felbermayr Jr. and Marco Seefried one, her top car remains the # 77 with Richard Lietz and Marc Lieb, with ten points clear the championship lead.
They are pursued by the AF Corse team with the # 95 and the crew Fisichella / Vilander / Alesi, although they could not win a race yet, but dotted constant. The victorious in Portimao # 96 Ferrari is this time not driven by Gianmaria Bruni and Jaime Melo, as the fighting in the same time moving ALMS for the title, but of the two Alvaro Barba and Parente, the latter known from various junior formula series.
The victory is probably identified between these two teams, but the other teams are good for tough fights for positions. Thrilling will be, whether JMW Motorsport can build with the yellow Aston Martin V8 Vantage to the good fourth place from the last race and whether the CRS Ferrari and the Imsa Performance Matmut Porsche back to find the form of the first race of the season.
American Le Mans Series
The most important news in the ALMS relates to the Cytosport team: Greg Pickett at the serious training accident at Mid-Ohio but serious injured than first thought and will have suspend for the remainder of the season. As the Porsche RS Spyder frontal one in the tire barrier and overturned it, the 63-year-old two broken ribs and a compression fracture of a vertebra moved to.
Replacement has worried from Germany: first came a new monocoque Zuffenhausen, now we recently announced as reserve driver for the race at Road America Timo Bernhard, who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Audi this year. And next week at Mosport Park will take the place on the side of Klaus Graf his French team-mate Romain Dumas. No announcement has been made yet for the Petit Le Mans; so far Audi has not yet announced, with which line up one wishes to contest the ILMC and thus (at least to the public) still unclear whether the Porsche works driver Bernhard and Dumas are rented for this race from the Ingolstadt based or whether they for use in the RS Spyder are free.
Thus, the Cytosport team has but at least for the next two races over enormously strong driver pairings, with the David Brabham and Simon Pagenaud in the Highcroft can record HPD it all. However, still the residue of 23 points after the boisterous Mid-Ohio race is unlikely to be aufholbar, if not added defaults for the Highcroft team.
With Dyson Racing is also expected back after the victory in Ohio; Drayson Racing for Jonny Cocker got there the superior pole, but these two teams usually suffer from reliability problems. To LMP1 cars from Drayson and Intersport is likely to Road America with its endless lines but especially meet, because even if they could overcome their stability problems.
The championship battle in the GT (2) class is marked as deisseits beyond the Atlantic from the duel between Porsche and Ferrari. Bergmeister / Long in the Flying Lizard 911 currently lead despite weak presence in Mid-Ohio with eight points ahead of Melo / Bruni, who were thrown back by the failure in Lime Rock, but won the other two of the last three races.
Only three points behind, so quite even with championship chances Auberlen / Milner follow the best BMW, eleven points behind the sister car Müller / Hand. The two Pratt & Miller Corvette falter terms of points, although they usually can keep up with the competition in the race. The second Risi Ferrari may take this weekend Pierre Kaffer and Mika Salo, Darren Law is back on the side of Seth Neiman, after having sat in the last race Patrick Pilet in the second Flying Lizard Porsche.
This "Fight Night" it is that determines the spectacular view of the ALMS race. In principle, each of these teams is capable of winning, sometimes even mix the Extreme Speed Ferrari and the Falken Tires Porsche in the battle for the courts. Last year it was the first and only ALMS victory for the BMW M3 GT2 at the same place - and the same in doubles. Although the two had been favored by a safety car period, but they already been on strong all weekend. Who wins at Road America anno 2010 is not predictable with the best intentions, a repetition of BMW's success is by no means excluded.
In the Le Mans Prototype Challenge continues to Level 5 (Tucker / Bouchut and Tucker / Wallace) and the Green Earth Team fight for the championship and are the favorites for the race win, with Scott Tucker is thanks to its dual launches advantage. In the GTC, Jeroen Bleekemolen and Timothy Pappas have now been adopted in the Drivers' Championship at the Black Swan Porsche after three wins in the last four races the lead. Their closest rival, Henri Richard, the Road America race must omit because of business commitments, so Andy Lally, but six points less in the account than Richard, Duncan end gets as teammates, who else in the second Grand-Am League , the Continental Tire Series, is on the way.
The IMSA has made further some balance of performance changes to better fit these two Challenge classes in the spectrum: the LMP Challenge cars get 10mm larger restrictors, presumably so that they have a more pronounced advantage over the GT cars and those not in way are, also some tuning options are opened. The GTC Porsche get a 65,5mm large restrictor installed after they were previously driving without one.
The race starts shortly after 20 clock German time, however SpeedTV rises in the United States until an hour later with the transfer to the live event. Radio Le Mans brings the Le Mans Series on his main channel, the ALMS on the special channel "RSL Extra". Let's hope that IMSA and ACO something better arrange themselves next year, the total of only 15 races (incl. Le Mans) should be actually fix without overlapping.
The ALMS Qualifying is on Saturday from 22:05 clock time German americanlemans.com/live streamed. For more about the ALMS are in Race Hub , the LMS-timing can be found on their homepage . Eventually there will also be here again in the Racing Live Blog a blog for the two races, so stop by during the Sunday evening just once.
