Indycar: Low voltage at Mid Ohio
The most exciting race on Sunday was not exactly. Only in the start-up phase a few times was overtaken - and in the final laps aroused the duel for the victory briefly from sleep.
If look even die IRL fans prefer the NASCAR finish at Watkins Glen, as the Indycars, then it is probably not in the race just a thriller. About wide range of running had in Mid Ohio rather the voltage level of the BR-alpha night program. After all: In the end, courageous attacks on leader Dario Franchitti was exciting again thanks to Will Powers. But even then there were the angled "Sports Car Course" at the end does not come - even if the Australians seemed faster. But power may be comforted: For zumnidest with a title it will be shown in the future höchstprominent in the Indycar history.
The "Mario Andretti Trophy", ie the round championship course is not to take it one round before the end of the season that is. But even as the air in the actual race was already out - because even Powers poles of Saturday was enough for the win this title.
But back to the race: At least in the initial stages namely there was something voltage. The main reason for this: Takuma Sato, who after a great performance qualification (P3) slipped to second place at the start behind Power. He lost that place it quickly back to Dario Franchitti, but the pace of the leading group he could hold quite well in a row. Too bad for the Japanese that he massively lost positions during his first pit stop, and then selbt bowled out of the race at the restart.
Another surprise: Alex Tagliani has once again guide sniffed the air. Thanks to a clever Boxenstratiegie the Canadians had worked after the first stint to the top, where he remains until the last round of pit stops. But because he had to clean it with two laps to power, Franchitti and Castroneves, he lost with cold tires a few positions. Nevertheless fourth is for Tagliani and the newly established FAZZT team a great result - especially on a circuit.
Also deserves a special mention has Simona de Silvestro. Eighth, only beaten by the Death Star, Tagliani and Matos is a great result for the Swiss from the not very financially strong HVM team. One, two additional ranks would have been inside but still with a better final pit stop - in the middle part of the race she could even hold (with the same rhythm Stop!) In front of Scott Dixon. Already in Edmonton they had garnered a lot of compliments for their good qualifying - the racing performance in Lexington was safe but again a notch. One can only wonder what de Silvestro can show in Sonoma.
Despite five different ways to win more disappointing: Andretti Autosport. Marco Andretti ended up as the best pilot in ninth, Ryan Hunter-Reay in 10th place Tony Kanaan, the the victory in Iowa was not helpful from its fundamental form deep, finished the race even only at position 17. The fourth in the league, Adam Carrol, was his great performance from the series debut at Watkins Glen not confirm, and ran colorless ride on a 19th place. He was still two places ahead of Danica Patrick, who finished last in the lead lap.
In KV Racing Mario Moraes brought by Sato's failure at least a few more coals from the fire - but rank 12 does not meet certain expectations of the team. Under the given circumstances, Moraes' racing performance is still not so bad: After a crash on Saturday in the newly reduced pit lane (more on this in the preview ) had to do his pit crew with two man short. Almost as expected: EJ Viso teammate took a plentiful unwise collision with Justin Wilson on lap 22 of the race itself once more.
The duel of two newcomers decided clearly JR Hildebrand for themselves, which could bring in a very respectable result with rank 16. Francesco Dracones debut was as expected mau: After he was able to hold in the first half of the race on the lead lap after all, he then delivered in sequence two turners in a row, each providing yellows.
Milka Duno was once again overtaking in the way, but otherwise showed little improvement over their previous season performances. Consequently, the Run line had time prescribe no "handling problems" - Duno was able to finish the race with four laps down after all.
Some news for next season and beyond were also known in Mid Ohio: So Hondy has now officially announced that it will provide 2012 turbo engine for new regulations for the series. In additional engine manufacturer waiting in Indycar, in vain - now it is mentioned that it could possibly be only in 2013 competition for Honda.
In addition, the team owner have in the context of the race met for talks with Dallara - and this very disappointed left (below) again. The Italian chassis Forge does not seem to want to give much Auskünft or (more likely) can in terms of details.
And CEO Randy Bernard has wiedermal in an interview with planet-irl.com for calendar 2011 expressed . But he has not revealed much new: The premiere race in Baltimore will probably receive another discharge date than previously announced. Motegi remains in the calendar, and is anti-climatic as held towards the end of the season. Compared to USA Today Bernard has also revealed that a total of 24 line operators have shown interest in the Indycar Series - next year it will nevertheless remain for reasons of cost closer to 17 or 18 events. More certainty in the form of a provisional calendar, there will be until the end of August - to all the races are confirmed, but it could take until mid-September.
A quick to look at the overall championship: There could Franchitti (420 points) to reduce its backlog Will Power (461) something. With only one round trip but four ovals on the remaining calendar, it looks for the Scots in terms of title defense so not too bad. But Scott Dixon (379) and Ryan Brscoe (352) have with luck - about a collision between Power and Franchitti - still an outside chance. Behind this Helio Castroneves (340) has again pushed past Ryan Hunter-Reay (336).
The next race is the round course-season finale in a half weeks in the beautiful (but not necessarily überholfreudlichen) Sonoma Valley.
