Indycar: Low voltage at Mid Ohio
The most exciting race on Sunday was not exactly. Only in the starting phase a few times was overtaken - and in the closing laps aroused the duel for the victory briefly from sleep.
If also view diehard IRL fans prefer the NASCAR finish at Watkins Glen, as the Indycars, then it is probably not in the race just a thriller. Over wide range of running had in Mid Ohio rather the voltage level of the BR-alpha Night program. After all: the end it courageous attacks on leader Dario Franchitti was exciting again thanks to Will Powers. But also there was the angled "Sports Car Course" at the end does not come - even if the Australians seemed faster. But power may be comforted: For zumnidest with a title it will be listed in future höchstprominent in Indycar history.
The "Mario Andretti Trophy", so the round trip Championship is not to take it one round before the end of the season viz. But also because the air in the actual race was already out - because even Powers Pole on Saturday was enough for the win this title.
But back to the race: At least in the early stages because there was still some tension. The main reason for this: Takuma Sato, who after a great qualifying performance (P3) slipped to second place at the start behind Power. He lost that place it quickly back to Dario Franchitti, but the pace of the leading group, he was able to keep quite well in a row. Too bad for the Japanese, that he massively lost positions at the first pit stop, and then selbt bowled out of the race while restarting.
Another surprise: Alex Tagliani has once again sniffed the air guide. Thanks to a clever Boxenstratiegie the Canadians had worked after the first stint to the top, where he remains until the last round of pit stops. But because he had to clean this two laps before Power, Franchitti and Castroneves, he lost with cold tires a few positions. Nevertheless fourth is for Tagliani and the newly founded FAZZT team a great result - especially on a circuit.
Also deserves an honorable mention Simona de Silvestro has. Eighth place, only beaten by the Death Star, Tagliani and Matos is a great result for the Swiss from the not just financially strong HVM team. One, two additional ranks would have been inside but still in a better final pit stop - in the middle part of the race she could even hold (with the same rhythm Stop!) Before Scott Dixon. Already in Edmonton they had garnered a lot of compliments for their good qualifying - the race idea in Lexington was certainly a notch again. One can only wonder what de Silvestro can show in Sonoma.
Despite five different paths to victory remains disappointing: Andretti Autosport. Marco Andretti ended up as the best pilot in ninth, Ryan Hunter-Reay on 10th place Tony Kanaan, which also includes the victory in Iowa has not helped out of his depth fundamental form, finished the race even only at position 17, the fourth in the league, Adam Carrol, was his great power from the series debut at Watkins Glen not agree and went according colorless ride to space 19 a. He was still two ranks in front of Danica Patrick, who finished last on the lead lap.
With KV Racing Mario Moraes made up for Sato's failure at least a few coals from the fire - but not rank 12 corresponds certainly the expectations of the team. Under the given circumstances, Moraes' racing performance is still not so bad: After an accident on Saturday in the newly reduced pit lane (more on this in the preview ) had to manage his pit crew with two men less. Almost as expected: EJ Viso took teammate with a plentiful unwise collision with Justin Wilson in round 22 once more himself out of the race.
The duel of the two newcomers decided clearly JR Hildebrand for themselves, who could clinch a pretty respectable result with rank 16. Francesco Dracones cost was expected mau: After he was able to hold in the first half of the race after all on the lead lap, he then delivered in episode two turners behind the other, each providing caution periods.
Milka Duno was once more overtaking in the way, but otherwise showed little improvement over their previous season performances. Consequently, the Run line had to time prescribe no "handling problems" - Duno was able to finish the race with four laps down after all.
A few innovations for the coming season and beyond were also known in Mid Ohio: So Hondy has now officially announced that it will provide for a 2012 turbo engine for new regulations for the series. Additional engine manufacturer waiting in vain Indycar still - meanwhile it is mentioned that it could possibly be only 2013 competition for Honda.
In addition, the team owner have in the context of the race met for talks with Dallara - and this very disappointed left (below) again. The Italian chassis forging does not seem to want to give much Auskünft or (more likely) can in terms of details.
And CEO Randy Bernard has wiedermal in an interview with planet-irl.com for calendar 2011 expressed . He has, however, not reveal much new: The premiere race in Baltimore will probably receive another discharge date, as previously announced. Motegi remains in the calendar, and is anti-climatic as take place towards the end of the season. Compared to USA Today Bernard has also revealed that a total of 24 route operators have shown interest in the Indycar Series - next year it will nevertheless remain cost reasons rather at 17 or 18 events. More certainty in the form of a provisional calendar, there will be until the end of August - until all races are confirmed, but it could take until mid-September.
A quick look at the overall championship: There could Franchitti (420 points) reduce its deficit to Will Power (461) something. With only one round course but four ovals on the remaining calendar it looks for the Scots when it comes to title defense so out not so bad. But Scott Dixon (379) and Ryan Brscoe (352) have with a bit of luck - about a collision between Power and Franchitti - still an outside chance. Behind the Helio Castroneves (340) has again pushed past Ryan Hunter-Reay (336).
The next race is the round course-season finale in half weeks in the beautiful (but not necessarily überholfreudlichen) Sonoma Valley.
