Formula 1 Analysis of Germany 2010: "Can you confirm that you understood that message?"

What a race at Hockenheim this yesterday! Since all the talking, "Formula 1 world" about the duel Webber / Vettel and Red Bull team's internal problems, only to Ferrari in the race revived an old tradition, that the team orders. However, it turned you on so stupid that everyone saw. Also, the FIA, but more on that later.

At the start Massa and Alonso managed to overtake Vettel, who came off less well. Massa was from the 3rd to overtake around the outside with a beautiful maneuver in Turn 1 also Alonso and thus resulted. Even Lewis Hamilton could start at a place do well, and overtook Mark Webber, who was only fifth. Schumacher started well, as always, very well and was suddenly eighth after the first round, ahead of team mate Nico Rosberg.

By no means was the starting phase and the whole Grand Prix for Force India and Toro Rosso. Liuzzi had to come in the first round to get a new nose, because he had Sutil touches. Of course, we moved on this occasion also the same tires. When we moved Liuzzi but hard by mistake 3 times and 1 times soft, at which point you had to come again to return to Tyre. For Sutil, who was scheduled after the first round, exactly the same thing happened. That may seem very strange, but in the rush for the pit stops when both vehicles can come in the same happen before. The result was another pit stop for Sutil, as any combinations are prohibited from soft / hard of course. At the end of the seats 16 and 17 jumped out the weekend you should check off quite quickly.

The same goes for Toro Rosso, which fared even worse. Alguersuari Buemi made it into the hairpin, the entire rear leave. Buemi Toro Rosso dragged the tattered but still in the box that's about it as well. Alguersuari had to stop though, but could at least go on. End result: 24 for Buemi, 15 for Algursuari.

Front while Massa was a little ahead of me out in about 2 seconds to Alonso with soft tires. The Ferraris were faster to use soft tires to stuff than the rest of the field and could be worked out over Vettel a lead of several seconds. Then came the pit stops and all the top cars came in within 3 rounds, except Button and Rosberg, who tried out the soft tire rauszuholen what was going on. It should pay off for both

Button led on the ground not made pit stops in the race, Massa was behind it, was it fast on soft tires, which the pace Alonso presented not quite go along with Harten. Alonso came closer and we realized it was probably 3-4 tenths quicker than Massa could per round. Meanwhile, the Red Bull had found some speed on the hard tires and was again the rest of the race in about 1.5 tenths per lap slower than the Ferrari.

Then Alonso was so close that he broke away from the hairpin and tried to Massa to pass. The defense, however harsh, but fair's position. Alonso then went first 1 second per lap slower than Massa and had detailed discussions with the box where the quote:

This is ridicolous!

fell. Alonso then went suddenly ran back to Massa, Massa and Rob Smedley of a few rounds had predicted even more:

We could win this race.

then gave him the following, as determined by Stefano Domelicali ordered, statement:

Alonso is faster than you! (Pause) Can you confirm that you understood that message?

And the Ferrari was just stupid. Yes, Alonso was faster than Massa, but then they say we just need to save fuel, the engine power or or or turn down. No Ferrari gave this clear statement. Massa then made things worse, and read Alonso provocative and demonstrative after the hairpin past when he did not simply accelerated. That was then, according to FIA's team is no longer driving but a tactical team orders. After the race against Ferrari was pronounced (local) maximum fine of $ 100,000 will also be Ferrari have yet to be tried by the World Council. McLaren this season has been repeatedly made the same as Ferrari, they have simply not made just so extremely stupid here.

Any other team would probably Ferraris in the situation in the points lying far better drivers and Alonso was brought forward to have at least one more chance at the championship. The team orders rule that was introduced in 2002 after Austria fiasco, is now, of course, engage in conversation, I find inappropriate. Where do you draw the line between driving and team tactical team orders? Was not that what Ferrari has made only "extreme team tactical driving," where you have admittedly made at extremely stupid, because Alonso was faster on the hard tires as Massa? The offers of conversation for the next week is already in Hungary to continue.

Ferrari celebrated but one (in terms of performance) earned a double victory. It's amazing what step did it because it was throughout the race faster than the Red Bull. Vettel was at the end of 3, only 6 Webber, as Button is pushed by his late stop in front of him. The McLaren brought the best opportunities for their race result at Hockenheim, with room for 4 and 5 for Hamilton button. Although Webber was within striking distance of the McLaren, but they were not on the basis of top speeds to pass easily. Kubica took the Renault at 7 to finish, team-mate Petrov was 10, so that is again a Renault ahead of the two Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher. Rosberg was able to stop to Schumacher by his late push over.

Not a good weekend for Sauber and Williams. The Williams got off to a bad start, and both fell out of the top 10, the chance was gone on points at the end was Barichello 12th Hulkenberg and 13th For cleaning this weekend, there were no points, even though the performance with Kobayashi at 11 to 14, and de la Rosa was not bad. Once one goes down from the top 10 or the ailing Renault Sauber is there and can get the points in the last two races, in Hungary, they have the next chance.

At the back of Glock was 18th and from Senna, 19, all other cars of the many new teams. Glock gets out of the Virgin which is that one must also accept your thanks.

I have kept the ban on team orders have always been superfluous. F1 is a team sport and it is needed to help his colleagues, it was finally so even in ancient times. It does not degenerate as in the two-make series, uh, the DTM. ;)

This is so the regulations but as was the overtaking Ferrari's not threaded so excessive sent. Sorry, this story puts a shadow over a superior race of Ferrari.

I copy and paste my comment from easy times over at AAS, sorry for the redundancy. :)

It is certainly not a common denominator in the question for or against team orders / team orders come for both sides, there are plausible arguments. I am then it seems more like Contra. And in my perception of team orders in most racing series, is also rightly (left vague wording and lack of detectability times from the outside) in some form more or less explicitly prohibited.

The principle of a race in motorsports is to be the driver about the distance of the race before others come to the finish, best known as the fastest. If a driver refused by the team orders, this principle is carried out by ad absurdum, and it goes really just pointless in a circle. "Fraud" is a big word, I use it only with reservations - but even more so than fraud on the sport itself, and fraud on the fan (want to see the deal no phony overtaking, but for his money real athletic competition under team-mate), is it is fraud at the driver who has a right to show his power. Of course, Alonso was faster, but this can be no justification for that Massa has passed to allow him - if Massa manages to prevent nominally faster riders for the rest of the race on overtaking and keep behind him, then that's a perfectly legitimate power. This is one of them, the art of overtaking and blocking is part of the sport. If the past can not be faster teammate, then that is-from a sporting point of view, be accepted for stupid's team, but must be performance oriented properly so that's convenient for them or not.

Re: radio messages, I am somewhat stunned by the stupidity of the implementation, and even more so than the team orders even after the abnormal Rumlügerei bothers me. For how stupid these people really think the rest of the world? Lies of this magnitude is a real insult.

You could have avoided this by had declared before the season when signing the drivers conditions that include situations such as these. That of the team riders dienliches behavior is expected on the track and make it independent Thoughtfully in doubt, support for the team-mates, without commands would be needed. That from this or that point in the season or point off to other teams is expected by the drivers, past the point of allowing better without visible PR disaster if he is one in the works. etc., etc. - how stupid it all is, some teams are doing something. Some teams also make it as McLaren, supra (keyword "engine problems, transmission problems, please Mixture 3, turn your no longer in 7th gear, please no more beyond 17 000 rotate, please save fuel, please come in time just the pits" or so).

I would be very much in favor, would Ferrari disqualified as a team, or withdrawn at least the team points.

  3. Toba 26th July 2010 at 17:04 #

Team orders is a fact. At a certain point in the season, each team makes it, just not transparent, so we have for viewers and fans of hard to understand situations like Turkey and Silverstone. The race result will stand as determined by the command, such as behind the wheel. Ferrari has actually done us all a favor and made transparent. It was the exact opposite of fraud.

If they allow it, thanks to the open radio transmissions can definitely relate to the fan at any time and form an opinion.
A ban on holding no one does, at least nothing.

(I must confess though that I, too, the interviews and PK was very embarrassing. It was hard to bear even for a fan.)

  4. nona 26th July 2010 at 17:34 #

Uh, no. They have not made it clear that they have made subtle and hidden, and then vehemently denied. And of course there was "fraud" in so far as this is contrary to its rules. Transparent "Felipe would be? Let Fernando past for championships. "And no fraud was" Fernando? You have already even try to come over to Felipe ... sorry, mate ... "

  5. Toba 26th July 2010 at 17:40 #

Ok ok, let's say they've been doing the most transparent. Sure, they are still trying to legally get out talk out of it and that was anything but beautiful. But my argument to change the first not much: the rule is irrelevant anyway, because nobody eh * holds it. And the fact that is so hotly debated as of controversy about it, makes the rationale of this rule have wiggle slightly.

    * The sheltering times now I just like that. But one finds so many examples of skilful turnover and preferences and so on.

  6. nona 26th July 2010 at 17:58 #

Can I see something like that, but I think it should not only fix the pros and cons of team orders rule, but also because it is the rule nunmal. As with any other rule, the teams try to bend the rules and interpret in their favor, and if in doubt to undermine it. Just the fact that the attempts with varying success, but must surely be no argument that the rule itself is meaningless, no matter whether it is flexible to aero parts or vehicle weights or Trump or anything goes. There is a binding set of rules, which is the same for all, and violation of these rules has consequences, period.

  7. Art Vandelay 26th July 2010 at 20:17 #

I think it's very good that there is the ban on team orders. It is simply not the case that the team orders not hurt Formula 1. Made the reputation of Formula 1 Ferrari has in what Schumacher and Irvine and Barrichello has suffered greatly. Of course, especially at the peak of Austria 2002nd One should not underestimate that. That cost a lot of F1 fans sympathies and ultimately evolving. Teamtatik course is part of the sport. But you can not simply make it as obvious as before, and Ferrari yesterday. It should be in a team does not give clearly defined beforehand by number 1 and 2. Should a maneuver for the World Cup as may be necessary, it must do it discreet. The rule for me is in 1st Line there to this obvious fact, the Ferrari has today placed on the day to prevent. Something like that hurts Formula 1 As one can look into any internet forum about newspapers. The average fan can not stand something like that!

What happened yesterday for me was just a mistake from Ferrari, who must be punished. They were not prepared for this situation. Wanted as it presents itself to me first and let Massa win some profitable opportunities for the exchange of positions discretion not to proceed. Must be used at Ferrari discussions have (Maybe there was a call from Maranello?) And it was decided that Alonso will win. Then we had no choice but to make it so obvious. Ferrari has since screwed up neatly what.

  8. I 26th July 2010 at 20:27 #

Team orders should never have been banned. It is one of the sport just as important as in cycling, or even in football. The title for the team is the goal! All the more so if it just is not just a sport, but each team a company. The title is just too much value as that one should throw it away. Not to mention the hundreds of employees who work tirelessly for a target. Schumacher has said in his interview on RTL very well.

It was at that time but not as forbidden as it were, was "scandalous" conspicuous. But, because this rule change - as with many others - the Ferrari was at least a halt to something. Only because it's competitors complained so loudly, so that everyone had already spent itself and Trump, or at least, if needed, would do so immediately. To divert attention from their own inability. And the fans of other teams and especially the British press were of course grateful to be able to attack the red series winner for anything.

Nevertheless, it is forbidden nunmal, and usually are observed. Or in this case, it must just make smarter. What Ferrari has shown, instead, was on the ridiculous hard to beat. Amateurs! Above all, Massa, who was probably so angry that he thought she had to pull off a show. A disservice to his team, he has proved it! Probably the inevitable punishment, they have attributed to their own stupidity.

  9. nona 26th July 2010 at 22:24 #

With cycling is not comparable, because cycling completely, with its large teams and other principles work differently than motor sports, there are individual team members specifically defined functions, and are from the outset to determine the athletic success of the team and some specialists in the team deliberately very to support. With the football is like comparing schonmal not at all, because football is a team sport from the outset. * Only * the team can win or lose in football, no single player in a team will end up champions. The "club membership" in motorsport, by contrast, a byproduct of organizational structures, and the Individual Championship is originally the main focus.

  10. I 26th July 2010 at 22:53 #

If ALL would abide by the lofty ideas of sportsmanship, the ban would not be necessary. But it is not and never will be. Therefore, one should not adopt rules that can not be enforced anyway. What will it be better if the teams hide their Trump Card "save fuel"? That's a lot more "fraud on the audience," as if it does open.

Ferrari will probably be punished, because the rule now even exist. But in truth they are penalized for (unintentionally) have been honest. And the hypocritical others who sell the audience with "save fuel" for fools that will continue to do well and remain unpunished.

  11. Vettel Fan 26th July 2010 at 23:40 #

Well, the audience led by the nose! The Felipe I'm in pain most of the story, after what feels like forever since he is again at the forefront, leading the race on flawlessly and then has to cede the victory to Fernando. Good - Alonso has a lot of residue in the World Cup, but this early in the season already ne clear team orders ...
And Jean Todt will attend the decision, well, thank you ... Mr.:
"Rubens, let Michael pass for the championship"
