Indy 500: Just passing on the disaster

A dominant Dario Franchitti had taken the race almost the tension - the powerful Andretti cars and the gasoline provided poker then do it again for fun. And Mike Conway's crash showed clearly how dangerous open-wheel oval racing is still.

In the end it was just do it again: When Dario Franchitti dominated the majority of the race at will, it would fuel the poker in the end almost cost the victory. This caused at least for a little excitement in an otherwise rather oval shaped race tactically. Nevertheless: In the squares behind Scottish driver bustled with which one could not count really. Above all, Andretti Autosport surprised with a strong performance. Has little reason to be satisfied, however Roger Penske team and driver error of all three cars cost a top result. That you are at all stress should perhaps consider something in order to contain the fuel in the Oval then poker was the crash of Mike Conway. The Briton had much luck in disguise. A slightly different angle impact would have brought about a great catastrophe.

In a way, the race finally fulfilled the expectations many had assumed that the Penske and Ganassi cars would dominate the classics. But that only one of the cars would go ahead as clearly, is something of a surprise. Especially Franchittis lead over Scott Dixon was amazing. The Kiwi lost but also many places because of a loosely assembled front wheel - without the error of his pit crew, he was never a threat to the reigning IRL champion.

Clear since the matter was already at Penske: There would be the driver - especially Helio Castroneves - maybe turn been closer to Franchitti. Finally, however, prevented many errors a good result. With Will Power to eighth as the best of the three pilots accustomed to success, the band is sure to be dissatisfied. Especially since it is indeed still on the lookout for a main sponsor.

Thus the pleasant surprises: Since all the above would be Andretti Autosport. So that the team can keep up so well after the giant had problems in qualifying a week ago, probably almost no one saved. Above all, Tony Kanaan, who having started vorkämpfte 33 times up second place was a very impressive performance. Good about it but was Marco Andretti, who handed in his best oval racing for many, and at the end was rewarded with third place.

Rather discreet way was Ryan Hunter-Reay: The season so far in the best consistent Andretti-pilot was good in the middle of the road. His race ended with a bang, to the last lap but he was quite unremarkable. Danica Patrick was indeed re not happy with the car, but could still end up with their best season in sixth place. Good memories they will keep the May 2010 but not, were also heard before the race again scattered boos from the stands. For someone who is so accustomed to pats on the back and positive media hype, certainly a character building experience.

A great race caught Dan Wheldon: Almost all the time the Briton in the field was out front, but it saved enough fuel to end up almost even attack can Franchitti. After a rather inconspicuous on the race courses around the force of Panther Racing splints on the ovals again aground on the form.

Could also impress the Rahal Letterman team: Niedmand would have noticed that since the Indy 500 last year, no IRL car of the squad was on the course. Nevertheless, several established teams could beat, and hold for long stretches in front of the field. Graham Rahal was finally removed with a rather questionable black flag from the top 10: The U.S. pilot was in a duel with Dan Whelon probably changed too often the line. For European conditions saw the maneuver is not deserving of punishment - on the other hand, shows the accident, Conway said that it is in the IRL all right if you try to avoid at all costs duels, which are so driven that could touch the wheels of the cars.

Best rookie Mario Romancini was at the end (13th), who won the duel with Simona de Silvestro (14) just for themselves. Had earned the victory in the rookie category but both: Romancini been able to show mediocre rides on Bump Day, and finally in the race, but that he might have more talent than ever was seen. Simona De Silvestro also delivered to the exhausting Indianapolis Speedway in only her second run from an oval to a very good performance.

Also, Justin Wilson and Mike Conway were in the Dreyer & Reinbold car running well, and have made over 199 laps, the best of their material.

Conway's accident on the final lap led vividly aware of how dangerous open-wheel oval racing is still: The moving front of him Ryan Hunter-Reay went into the last lap, suddenly out of gas, could not avoid Conway, and drove on. The car went in the direction Fanzaun and broke the following impact in several parts. Fortunately, after all, the monocoque remained intact. Conway broke in the accident when the left and a thoracic vertebra. As a result, he now has to wear a supporting cast for three months for the back - the season has gone well. Ryan Hunter-Reay was injured a few Bädner in the thumb, and also had to undergo surgery. But it should be this coming weekend in Texas there again.

This is all bad - in spite of some serious injuries, both drivers were still huge blessing in disguise. Conway's car would be because after lifting something moves differently, he would have ended up with the helmet in the catch fence - and whether he would be in the fall and still dwell, must be questioned. Hunter-Reay also had tremendous luck: Conway's flying car hit his helmet Boldien in height. The passenger compartment has scratches front and behind the helmet. Only Hunter Reays permanent head verschon by rail shouted luck. Again: If the car he hit on the head, the disaster would have been inevitable.

Thus, the IRL has escaped again. Nevertheless, one should consider in particular spectacle, which may bring a tank drama, if you still want to risk that. After all, no rider can react quickly enough to an oval one immediately before becoming slower car still appropriate to avoid. Accidents such as from Sunday may well be avoided only if you change something on Tankregelemnt. A test portion, which must still be present after crossing the finish would not take anything from the tension of a fuel poker - because whether it comes to the just with fuel or "just with 5 liters" is kommmen the target irrelevant to the voltage . You could reduce the risk of such accidents, but massive.

In the championship has also done little for the Indy 500: Will Power will remain relatively clear - even if the projection is decreased because of the meager eighth place in Indy anything. Dahiner now lurks Dario Franchitti, who in turn is followed by teammate Dixon.

The next race is already on Saturday night in Fort Worth, Texas instead. It is followed by a detailed preview later this week.

The sounds of the minimum amount of fuel so beautiful, but Surely no man can see:
The Top 10 at finish line only temporarily, not immediately after arrival ceremony.
If the tank is empty you can see it at least equal, if the tank has only 4.98 liters and will announce the 3 hours later, that's nothing for the spectators.

I had initially thought of me too - am otherwise not a friend of such regulations. But in the case is far from holding a security risk.
Maybe you could even represent the (at all measurement inaccuracy) graphically? A lamp on the car, which comes on or something?

A simple way would be if an amount is not reached, the leaves to roll out a fear within the next mile, just the tail light comes on. Afterwards, then the Travellers could create something better that the colleague is about to slow down. For this we would need no measurement then afterwards, with all the bad consequences. In a discussion of whether 5,000 l now have to be in the tank, whether or not 4.998 l rich, I can do without you.

Honestly, the fuel-poker-roll-with-empty fuel tank is just one of so many causes that can provoke such an accident and it's really a miracle that not more often the catch fence in Indy. This begins with misfiring on passes transmission problems, engine problems so technical things that lead to losing someone to speed, but human error can produce at open-wheeler like to stop the ascent of one of the vehicles involved. Even Vettel could rob with some bad luck over the wheel of Webber on weekends and would then be risen, just as an example.

On a track with a lot of space up to a direct head hit but the risk is manageable in my opinion, on an oval with a wall and catch fence adjacent to the track, I think it is irresponsible to continue to drive those speeds with exposed wheels. Some how I was boycotting since Greg Moore's death oval race of open Wheelern know. I almost would have weakened some over the weekend purely to watch but when I see the video again I suddenly realized that I did not want to watch again as someone dies Sun

Irresponsible? No. It is your right, you not to watch. Similarly, it would not come to the right of every good driver. But the fact is that security arrangements have worked very well (whether the injury would have prevented even more may be, will hopefully be explored).

Of course, the accident would be disastrous to the angle would have been different. Absolute certainty is also on slower non-oval not, and it is often simply a matter of luck. See Massa, Trulli see Chandhok in Monaco.
