Formula One preview 2009

So it's happening again and as a fan you have to make some changes in focus. The cars have the new aerodynamics is well known. And also, that this means that more or less all had to start from scratch.

f1_grand_prix_logo So completely does the phrase with the "white sheet" of paper, of course not, because the aerodynamics was not changed completely, but only circumcised. Even last year, drove the first team tests with the lower output values, and many started developing the 09 car very soon. BMW renounce the struggle for the world title, which led to Robert Kubica in a slight fit of anger. In the former Honda team was Ross Brawn before a car that you Could not be saved. Starting last spring, he put much of its budget in the new chassis. The teams were not so flabbergasted when she brought her car in January at the track. At least not all of them.

Because everything is new and because the Formula One of course is a completely paranoid bunch, who wanted the team can not look at their cards. Never was it so hard to read from the test data, a reasonable Rangordung. First, because almost everyone in Melbourne will again show new parts, and secondly, because you never know how much weight and fuel it was traveling, and who began KERS, and who is not and what it does at all.

For KERS has not (yet) shown as the great savior. Up to six tenths with the push of energy to be there, but unfortunately, KERS is so heavy that it is just as fast without KERS. BrawnGP waived then what for the entire season on the energy recovery. At BMW running KERS, but the weight worries, just at McLaren, whose problems are known to the rear axle. At Renault has done it, but it is supposedly not see it when Williams was there, but was allegedly not used in Toyota will abandon you. Red Bull is probably where Renault is, Force India, where Mercedes is just at STR do you not understand what makes Ferrari and whether the use KERS at all are.

I will not list all the rule changes this year, but a few should be mentioned:

- One year has 8 engines are available. The engine no longer has two races in a row by holding, but you can change the engine. He only needs to keep from Saturday morning until the finish line. The eight engines used up, the team gets even a penalty (+10 on the grid). There are no Fridays "test motors" anymore.

- The transmission has to hold out but four races in a row, otherwise there is +5 at the start.

- Quality is graciously untouched, but you will publish the tank and the amount of tire with which one takes off.

- Between the week before the first race of the season and 31 December of each calendar year, testing is generally prohibited.

And now the teams that I list the order in which I einschätze. The sequence in the middle is extremely difficult to estimate and will vary during the season safely. Toyota, Renault, Williams, Red Bull, McLaren BrawnGP and probably will be very, very closely. Even last year it was in the qualification part of thousandths, which is not 2009 be any different.

The driver will turn tomorrow.

Ferrari
ferrari-04_09 I see the razor-thin Italian front. And not necessarily because they have the better car and / or motor. BMW is certainly on a par since. But something tells me that Ferrari have the development potential of the better cards. The car is shaped a little more extreme. The side pods are deeply moved despite KERS, Ferrari is the only team to a slightly recessed front wing, which will bring more pressure under the car. It has extended the trail again, and the engine is among the best in the field. Weak points are KERS for Ferrari, reliability, and at least one pilot. Overall, they have but the new rules easily adapted remarkably well and the tests were more or less silent, apart from some reliability problems. You never know whether a team of some components just as long as the car leaves until they are over.

BMW
P90045189 The Munich go into this season, "all in". You have said repeatedly that its goal was to take the championship. Everything else is irrelevant. Can also be good that Mario Theissen, the BMW board, may hold, given the lousy numbers of the group, even with the argument "World Champion" at the bar. So to win her or Kubica and Heidfeld at the end should be near the throne. The team is under pressure from the first race, which is not bad. BMW made an uneventful winter job, but fought well, according to the statements of some observers and Nick Heidfeld, with the tire wear on the rear axle. He's been just too big and slow the car a sustainable manner. The culprit is also the extra weight of KERS. In designing this year BMW has remained remarkably conservative. I had expected, especially since other solutions in the front, when you consider how brave the Munich last year were. Face of constant good times should be from BMW to start again. Whether they have air diem and experience to compete in a championship fight, is another question.

Toyota
toyota-04_09 Toyota should be some step to be successful up front? Even last year we had a conservative design situated right and I suspect that in the last year also started very early with the development of the 09er truck. That seems to be paying off. As early as February in Bahrain could go along at first the pace of the Ferrari, but interestingly, was also in Barcelona. Toyota is still a grab bag where you never know what's inside. Your car may not be as extreme as the Ferrari and Red Bull, but they have found some interesting solutions they flush to the front. Problem is that it completely without KERS. That may still be an advantage at the start of the season, which looks like the end is hard to say. Toyota will not be a serious World Cup candidate, but could turn up regularly on the podium places.

McLaren
mclaren-04_09 This is the British-German team has a problem, they have been last week finally time to. I do not think McLaren are "substantiated". Rather, the problem seems to be very serious. After all, you have not done it in less than two months to find a solution. The "rescue attempts" saw some already made a little helpless. Maybe you know what the problem is, it can not change and try to make the most of it. Perhaps you have simply no idea and pokes around in the fog. At the moment they seem to be at least one second to turn back, but one should not underestimate McLaren. Since even the entire car would be a total flop, which would of course be given the test ban a catastrophe. I see Hamilton does not defend his title, if McLaren did not solve the problem until early May. If the rear axle is basically crap, one will take too long afterwards, in order to break into the World Cup anything can. The fourth position, which I have indicated, but they get during the season.

BrawnGP
brawngp-04_09 One could BrawnGP to the second or even put the first place. But you can also grab the last. It's just not clear why the car is so fast. Always wear a little gas? Or by 50 kg ballast was taken out? Is it the controversial diffuser? But it is a miracle - because you build for half the unit so that it fits Mercedes engine, and then the car is still fast. What would have happened if Honda would have stayed? It is clear that Brawn could take until December the money with hands full for the 2009 season out of the window. He has made manifest, even if he could work only in theory since December on. Interesting is also the question of whether and how to cope with the development pressures in the season can be. The drivers are undisputed. Button will be beaten for years by value, which is no longer the fastest ever Rubinho, but a "speed demon", you know, yes. BrawnGP should really have the speed, we are in for a fun season.

Renault
renault-04_09 The biggest surprise of the winter supplied from Renault. The design of the R29 is already used to and I'm not so sure myself that the French are really there. I think they could have found in front of something that gives them a lot of potential in the hands, but the tail, seems with its outflowing parts dolle not working. Much has been doctored rum, but it seems at the end of the tests quickly, at least on a round of his. Would not be surprised if Alonso is in Australia in the qualification in the first two rows, go down in the race but will mercilessly. At Renault, we have also buckled their belts, what will not make the car easier development of the complex. If they do not suddenly discover the car of the year, they have to do again with the title decider nothing.

Red Bull
red-bull-04_09 One has the best car by far. At least until the cockpit, as the tail fin is already bad ugly. But beautiful is just not fast, and Newey is known to slightly bitchy divas build. And so you probably wondered at times around during the test. In the beginning they were the front runners, but then the other and found out for himself in the midfield. May well be that brick Red Bull, but can also be that they simply have not the car fully under control. From her potential but they seem to look good and I'm assuming that they can take a leading position no later than mid-season. What will also probably be necessary, because you do not ever drive behind.

Williams
2009 Formula One Testing. Very difficult to assess. I once carefully sorted below, because it seems to me that two things could endanger their speed. On the one hand you had known financial difficulties that may have impacted negatively on the development of the car in January. Secondly, the question whether the limited resources of Williams this year are sufficient for a good start. The team is, as always, dependent in recent years, the first six to eight races, because you will then probably hung back from the manufacturers. However, they were very quick in testing and that they are not then continue to have noticed, it must mean nothing. You might as well be on par with Toyota in Australia. The team would want it to.

Toro Rosso
toro-rosso-04_09 Which will have a difficult year. Berger gone away Vettel, the entire store is for sale. All psychological reasons that do not help a team really. It has been this year, a copy of Red Bull for the first time built himself, that produced the parts. This also means that you could run quite a bit of self-development and had to adapt the car to the slightly larger Ferrari engine. Therefore the car was extremely late, so that you walk behind the development. On the driver's side one is well stocked, could surprise, especially with Bourdais slicks this year.

Force India
force-india-04_09 Remain the backbenchers who will probably hit around with Toro Rosso. But what would be a considerable progress already. We must not forget that the team has few resources and little time was put into the tests. It would be a "Brawn" miracles have been necessary. However, it would be a giant step if the team could bring down the gap to 10th place at well under one second. This would have a good chance to come times in the points, which this year is certainly possible. Also you will see how the far-reaching impact cooperation with McLaren. The McLaren has a problem with the rear axle may have an impact on Force India, McLaren even get the engine, gearbox and KERS.

I'm curious if firstonce the car of Brawn really meets the regulations. When I watch you I get the diffuser because certain doubts. Hopefully this will be clarified before the start of the season. Would be nice if we like to start the season have protests and appeals. With or without this thing is really difficult to assess Brawn but I do think that they can expect ahead. Last Sunday was Alex Wurz, who yes there is more or less as a consultant now, the ORF interview. The seemed very confident. Anyway, I do not think they have taken or are driven out weight always empty. They have shown what they can, the only question is whether the other teams have done.

Also tells me the feeling that Ferrari will be in front. Whether BMW what it takes for a title fight has, dare I highly doubt. They're already last year with some hair-raising mistakes noticed during the race weekends.

I expect Red Bull ahead. Then came over to me a lot of subliminal Optimus. Especially from Vettel in some interviews. A few victories I trust that in any case.

The eight engines used up, the team gets even a penalty (+10 on the grid).

So you can take 1-8 races a new engine that gets in race 9 with a new Motoor +10 and may again in the 10-17 race with impunity, install a new engine? WTF?

  4. DonDahlmann 25th March 2009 at 19:19 #

Nope. Sorry, that was expressed misleading. From the ninth engine you always get a penalty. (+10)

    @ DonDahlmann:
Had I even suspect already was, but then too lazy to dig myself to the rules. And it would even be trusted that this formulation only after 9 Race to notice only after you've laughed great that Team X has every race NEN new engine. A dispute is this circus but otherwise never out of the way ...

What about the new SC rules? I think there's more chaos and strife for pre-programmed.

I would treat the Brawn team success - but only if the car is legal.

  8. DonDahlmann 25th March 2009 at 21:15 #

    @ I:
After the SC rules I've also searched. So far I have the impression that everything stays the same. There was once talk of the pit lane will remain open, but I've found no confirmation of this.

  9. I 25th March 2009 at 21:37 #

New safety car rules: pit lane will remain open

Whether this is an improvement over the last few years, the mischief is another matter. The possible problems should be obvious. But we'll see perhaps in a few days in Melbourne is a SC is known not so unlikely.

  10. Xander 25th March 2009 at 21:49 #

So far as I know it is an open pit lane, it is an SC light on the steering wheel on the display and see each driver a minimum lap time is displayed. If you drive faster punished us.

"The teams have before the start of the race now publish their fuel loads and tire strategies. Thus, the guesswork is unnecessary until the first pit stop "(source:. )
Is that correct? The quality Machts still make sense, but in the race? How can one define as a general strategy. It depends but always from the running of the race!

Before kick-F1: Racing Blog @ analyisert the teams: http://tinyurl.com/cj89qc + Alonso and Button as the favorite of the bookmakers.

  13. Prometheus 26th March 2009 at 18:39 #

@ Thomas41: It is - if I understand correctly - so that the fuel load and tire compound, with which one starts, must be published. Anything else would be quite inclined ... (although I'm not even with this change particularly happy)
