Update: Franchitti broke his left ankle. This has been the NASCAR and the PR man from Ganassi, Kelby Krauss confirmed. He will be replaced by David Stremme in the race. Thanks also to "Prometheus" for the note in the comments.

In the (currently ongoing) NW race at Talladega, there has been a serious accident. Dario Franchitti burst in the early rounds, when the field was very close together, a right front tire. Franchitti sailed relatively smoothly into the wall, slid down the steep wall and the matter seemed to have cleaned up as Johnny Sauter came rushing in and hit Franchitti in the amount of the A-pillar at high speed. Franchitti had the safety net on the driver's side up, which is always a good sign. He was rescued from the car, but was conscious and was supported. Apparently he hurt his left foot / ankle / leg. The injury does not appear life threatening, but very difficult to be because he was taken directly from the track hospital to hospital. Once there is more information, there is an update. His start in tomorrow's race in the Sprint Cup, however, seems at risk.
