NASCAR & Sky / A1 GP Australia / BTCC: New TV Deal

NASCAR: It's Sky. And now?
As already reported that NASCAR made a deal with the Rupert Murdoch empire belonging to the Sky Group has closed. And this for two years. The decision is somewhat surprising, even if this had been announced in recent days. It was fixed but generally assumed that NASCAR would complete the deal with ESPN, in any case, it can make its European channel NASN to ESPN in the rebranding known. NASN is now without the Sprint Cup in UK / Ireland because it loses an important driving force. It is now time to speculate on why NASCAR has made a deal with Sky, but the subject of money is likely to have played a role. Sky is a little under pressure through the Setana group have been part of football broadcasting rights and the EU was the previous deal between the Premier League and Sky not too happy. Sky Sports is doing so well to provide themselves with more attractive offers. In the English speaking forums Weeping is accordingly large, depending on which subscription you have. Even the spectators are Setana still assumed that they can see the NASCAR.

And what does that mean for Germany? The first thought that one is, is the fact that Murdoch has acquired but 15% of Premiere. Since he could certainly be ... No, he could not. On the part of the NASCAR says explicitly that Sky holds the rights only for UK / Ireland and no more. Even if Murdoch buy premiere tonight and tomorrow at 100% rename it to "sky" would, he could not broadcast the Sprint Cup in Germany. As far as I am aware, it is also impossible to buy a Sky Sports subscription in Germany, unless one buys the associated clutter in the UK and knows someone that buys a subscription for one.

The situation has become for the German fans so absolutely not improved, as some believe. However, I have again sent a request to someone in NASCAR, with the deulichen Please, tell me about times the current situation of the TV rights in Germany. After UK is clear, too, then what might come.

A1 GP - Eastern Creek
The race of the A1 had a relatively high entertainment value, because it was raining in torrents. As soon as you start you got a taste of what is going on this year in Formula One, when it rains. Upon approval, nothing happened only once, because all are either very carefully let the clutch, or stood still with pointless spinning tires. Only the South Africans and also Michael Ammermüller came well forward. The German had landed in training only at # 13, and worked his way quickly to the front. Really well, he came after his good start but not anymore, and so ended his race and seventh place. Front, it went quite well to the point, however, retained most of the drivers also have a cool head and waited for the guy in front would make a mistake under pressure. It happened here and there before, but for an A1 race went forward it to almost static. In midfield, fought against it and a lot of riders were pleased with the generous sized run-off areas and the lush greenery. Really angry flew from none what so ever is also a benefit. A remarkable achievement was the South African Adrian Zaugg in the main Renne, of the race was pretty confidently decide for themselves, and thus South Africa back to fourth place hoisted the national rankings, which now looks like this:

First New Zealand 96
Second France 96
Third Switzerland 93
4th South Africa 79
5th Germany 77

The A1 engines do well and like 250 hp less than the Formula One. In addition, they have a broader power band and not so nervous response to the accelerator. When the amount of spins you've seen in Eastern Creek, you can imagine what's going on in a race in Formula One. But thanks to the asphalt run-off areas there should also represent a big problem, but rather the voltage to be beneficial.

And what else?
The BTCC has announce today that it signed a new TV deal. The same time but unfortunately the old, and remains outside MotorsTV. In England, the coverage is extended to ITV, however, radiates the game from non-territorial table, but only via satellite / cable. It is also unfortunate that the BTCC is still to be seen no longer in Germany. The races there are usually really good and very exciting to drive along the beautiful traditional courses such as Thruxton, Oulton Park and Knockhill.

If I understand correctly, the rights situation, and ask corrected 'me if you have better information, then NASCAR has sold the international rights outside North America have been in the last round of rights to ESPN.

Thus, the issue has done for NASCAR, ESPN is responsible for marketing. Sky has therefore their UK / Ireland-rights nor of NASCAR, but by that same ESPN may be for sale.

And if you still consider that there are NASN in two versions, one for UK / Ireland and Continental Europe, can the whole thing including ESPN and NASCAR on rebranding continental NASN certainly be a shoe.

As the days were noted a rights sale in continental Europe (Premiere, AB Moteurs, ...) and therefore much more meaningful in terms of planning by ESPN for NASN. Sell the Sprint Cup at a local station in the broadcasting area have NASN, other local partners no more excuses. ESPN's NASCAR reserves but for continental NASN area complete in itself, it is probably a strategic decision.

No, the NASCAR negotiated directly with Sky Sports. ESPN is because out of it. It was at that premiere, too. The deal directly with Robbie Weiss of NASCAR. The Communication on Sky Sports this there is also a comment from White. I also thought that ESPN is involved with, but that I was wrong. According to my sources, ESPN is not involved in these negotiations.

Therefore, I also think that it is not the deal with NASN came about.

What Dennis says. I always thought also that ESPN holds the worldwide marketing of TV rights, but there are probably "only" the worldwide marketing rights to the series. Where exactly is the difference? I know the contract does not exist. It may also well be that ESPN is acting as an agency and sorted the situation first. Similar to a spot where an agency and the first candidate for a production and then explores with the client to negotiate the details.

Thanks for the clarification, this has indeed Rechtegetummel more surprising twists and turns than a 400-mile race on 'nem 1.5 miles cookie cutter.

So I wonder why NASCAR and Premiere is at the end of last season, came close enough that the contract has just announced premiere ever, but it will not come to a conclusion. Did the Red White about her performance on the ground showed too much interest and aroused desires?

When the NFL was also PREMIERE rauskegelt surprising. PREMIERE ebefalls then had shown so much hubris and recruited without a valid contract with the NFL. The NFL, however, had a thick neck because of the presence of loud-mouthed because Premiere and Premiere did not want to show all the games offered (including the Sunday Night games not Sun / Mon to 2h). Then came NASN, offered a lot of gravel, flunkerte a bit with the range and got the contract.

Looking at the current cost-cutting measures in football, it could possibly be a scenario: PREMIERE did not want all races live or reduce the size of the transfers and the contract offer from NASCAR and ESPN was withdrawn in a row.

As I said, pure speculation by me without that I would currently only an indication that this scenario is correct.

@ Racing blog. Quick correction: BTCC on ITV4 is transmitted live, and is also terrestrial (freeview = dvb-t) can be received.
@ Wolli. BTCC is transmitted on ITV since 2002.

@ Fan! Btcc program and by 2006 were also made by MotorsTV and Setanta Sport 1 2007. In parallel, each 1 or 2 races were broadcast live Btcc on ITV, but never the entire package live as planned in 2008. So my question is exclusively for ITV Uk and Ireland to the broadcaster?

  9. DonDahlmann fifth February 2008 at 12:09 #

As far as I know ITV has all rights, because you surely can get the channel via satellite in Europe. This is also the reason why no award has been given MotorsTV more.
